A tragic accident at a shopping mall construction site in Kyrenia, Girne Merkezi, North Cyprus claimed the lives of two local workers on 28th of September, 2023. The incident occurred at approximately 15:34pm while construction was underway.
Eyewitnesses report that the workers were on a scaffolding platform when it suddenly collapsed, causing them to fall from a height of 13feet. Despite the swift response of emergency services, both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of their injuries.
The victims have been identified as Mr Eylül Aydin, 44 and Mr Ali Mura, 39. Their families have been notified, and support services are being provided.
An investigation has been launched by Cypriot authorities to determine the cause of the accident. Preliminary assessments suggest that structural failure may have been a factor in the scaffolding collapse. The construction site has been temporarily closed, and all operations have been suspended pending further inspection.
The company managing the project, Hermanni Construction Group, released a statement expressing condolences: “We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased. We are fully cooperating with authorities to investigate the incident and ensure the safety of our operations moving forward.
This incident has reignited concerns about workplace safety in Cyprus Construction Industry, which has one of the highest rates of work-related accidents in the country. Authorities are urging construction firms to prioritize worker safety and adhere to strict safety protocols.
